If you are involved in your community, want to promote the welfare of children, young people or adults, and are happy to be the voice of service users in meetings, then this could be the opportunity for you!

Both the Essex Safeguarding Children and Adult Boards are looking to appoint volunteer Lay Members from April 2016, for a period of 2 years, with a review after 1 year.

The role of the Lay Members will be to:

  • support stronger public engagement in local safety issues;
  • provide a unique perspective on how the Boards can better communicate and consult with the public;
  • further enhance the Boards links with community groups, particularly about protection issues;
  • provide oversight and scrutiny as a member of the local community into the decisions made by the Boards.

You will have an interest in safeguarding, an ability to communicate effectively in meetings, and the confidence to ask questions and challenge people in a constructive way. You will have an awareness of, and a commitment to, equality and diversity and will be able to handle confidential information appropriately.

You must live in Essex and expenses will be reimbursed to cover travel. The successful applicant(s) will be subject to statutory safeguarding checks including references, identity verification and an enhanced CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) disclosure.
